The Call to Action – A Demand for Transparency

In April 2026, the cost of living for families in New South Wales is being significantly impacted by limited access to clear and timely information. Many Australians are committing to long-term mortgages in car-dependent suburbs without fully understanding how future fuel costs may affect their day-to-day living expenses.

We call on the NSW and Federal Governments to take practical steps towards greater transparency and accountability:

  • Release real-time reserve data: The National Fuel Security Plan would benefit from greater visibility. A public-facing dashboard, updated regularly, should indicate available levels of diesel and petrol within NSW
  • Fuel resilience disclosures: Similar to BASIX energy ratings, new developments could include a form of fuel or transport resilience indicator, helping buyers understand reliance on private vehicles and proximity to public transport
  • Strengthen domestic capability: Continued support for domestic refining capacity remains important to maintaining supply stability
  • Local government planning: Councils should carefully consider transport infrastructure when approving new developments, particularly in rapidly growing areas in the North West and South West of Sydney

Before entering into a property transaction, it is worth considering how dependent a property is on private vehicle use and whether viable transport alternatives are available. At Flash Conveyancing, we look beyond the title to help clients understand broader risks that may affect long-term liveability.
